The Ports of Auckland (POAL) terminal yard capacity is currently under considerable pressure due to the high amount of import containers discharged from vessels over the weekend. As of this morning (Nov 5) the utilisation of the yard has reached 100% hence, we are experiencing significant delays in servicing the port. This affects road movements, but more specifically our rail movements.
Currently, POAL is struggling with resources to service both road carriers and rail requirements. With the increased yard utilisation truck turn times will have been affected as POAL are, at times, having to dig for containers, additionally we are experiencing delays of up to 4 days for rail movements.
Extra resources have been committed to R&D in order to assist with easing the pressure, however, we don’t see any let up in the interim.
These constraints are beyond our control, please ensure you talk to your shipping line to extend detention free time especially if you are on 7 days. There are other areas where we can work together to streamline our mutual operations: these include out of hours site access, low wait times on delivery sites and putting pressure on shipping companies and customs agents to provide the right paperwork, releases and pre-advice to ensure that our resources are maintaining productivity and focused on delivering agreed services to our customers.
Responding to our working environment
Our customer services team and despatchers are being instructed to work to our SLAs where we can and not to make unrealistic promises.
Terms and conditions
We are not able to accept any liability for demurrage, detention and futile trips incurred due to capacity issues, restricted bookings, acceptances not being issued, public holidays.
We are doing all we can, alongside POAL Rail Teams, to ensure long dwell units are removed from Port as soon as we can.
